While stomach acid-diminishing drugs are big business, there must be a good reason why the healthy stomach is able to concentrate hydrochloric acid to 100,000 times the acidity of the bloodstream.
Concentrated stomach acid is required for healthy digestion and assimilation of essential nutrients (particularly protein), maintenance of the acid barrier to infectious organisms entering the body through the digestive tract, and maintenance of an acid-alkaline balance that supports the colonization of the gut by healthful bacteria.
As we age it is normal for the capacity to concentrate hydrochloric acid (HCl) in the stomach to degrade.
Insufficient hydrochloric acid may cause symptoms of indigestion such as gas and bloating that give the impression of excessive acidity, but are actually the result of fermentation enabled by insufficient HCl.
This reduction of HCl production, a condition known as hypochlorhydria, may cause symptoms in people as young as their 30’s. By the time people reach their 60’s, half produce insufficient HCl for full digestion; by age 85 fully 80% of otherwise healthy people are hypochlorhydric.
Bio-Acidic provides 640 mg of HCl per tablet as Betaine and Glutamic HCl to support the stomach phase of digestion.
Bio-Acidic should be taken at the beginning of a meal; the optimal number of tablets established by a challenge protocol.
Begin by taking one or two tablets at the beginning of meals, then each day increase by one tablet per meal.
As soon as a “warm” or acid-stomach feeling is experienced, reduce by one or two tablets to achieve an optimal level.
Remember that a meal of high protein foods, particularly milk products, may require extra HCl.
Seven Bio-Acidic tablets per meal is generally a maximum, with most people needing less.
When more than three tablets per meal are taken, it is best to take one or two tablets at the beginning of the meal and the balance during the meal.
In some cases, particularly in individuals with a history of heavy antacid use, endogenous production of HCl may rebound and the number of tablets reduced accordingly.
